WHY HAS IT BEEN SO WET IN THE SOUTH THIS WINTER?

This winter we are in a Neutral phase it brings a lot of wet weather typically due to the active subtropical jet stream pictured below and as you can see most of the extreme cold air stays north. Of course that does not mean we still don’t get cold air from time to time just not record breaking cold. Right now Atlanta is having the 2nd wettest February on record with over 10” of rainfall so far. The top wettest February on record was 1961 with 12.77” of rain. 2018 ended the 2nd wettest year on record with 70.03” largely due to El Niño. The wettest year in Atlanta was in 1948 with 71.45” of rainfall.
