Tracking The Tropics Early August Tropical Update and Updated Hurricane Season Forecasts

The recent and continued Lull in Tropical Activity is due to dry air and Saharan Dust across the Atlantic Ocean. When the Dust moves across the ocean it can and often does inhibit tropical development. It has been a busy season thus far in the Pacific Ocean but only a few storms so far in the Atlantic and Gulf. Most years July does not have much tropical activity. Activity typically ramps up during the middle and end of August especially the 2nd half of August and into September. The peak of Hurricane season is right around the corner. Thankfully Tropical Activity is not expected this week. Over 90% of activity typically occurs after August 1st. The next Atlantic storm will be Danielle. Last year there was 21 storms, 7 Hurricanes and 4 major Hurricanes. In 2020 there were 30 named storms, 13 Hurricanes and 6 major Hurricanes. Several storms impacted Georgia and Alabama during the 2020 Hurricane season. It only takes one to be a memorable season and Tropical Storms and Hurricanes aren’t just a coastal threat.
