Hurricane season typically peaks between August and October with the maximum peak coming in the middle of September. The Fall is typically a busy time for Hurricanes because wind shear is typically very weak and it is past the time Saharan dust moves across the ocean.
Wind shear is the variation of the wind's speed or direction over a short distance within the atmosphere. The water temperature in the ocean rises as we go throughout summer and the first half of Fall – the result of sunny days, warmer air temperatures, and more moisture in the atmosphere. Warmer ocean temperatures drive greater storm activity. Typically water temperatures between 80 and 85 are conducive for tropical development and any temperatures 85 and above can really cause a storm to intensify. Many storms in recent years especially 2020 and 2021 have rapidly intensified like Ida and Zeta.
