Record Low Great Lakes Ice Coverage.

Great Lakes Ice Coverage this winter is less than 2% (1.8%). Typically this part of winter (January) the average for Great Lakes Ice coverage is 21.6%. Temperatures around the Great Lakes and much of Illinois and Michigan have been running on the warm side this winter above average temperatures has been very common during the winter of 2020-2021. This could lead to an increased chance for lake-effect snow by the end of January and into February. This could also negatively affect The Great Lakes because typically the more ice there is the better the shore is protected from erosion during major storms. Lakeshore areas are more vulnerable with less ice especially when major wind storms occur.
