RECORD HURRICANE SEASON: The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on five tropical cyclones over the Atlantic basin. This ties the record for the most number of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic basin at one time, last set in Sept 1971. Not only is there Hurricane Sally which will pound the Gulf coast and even areas inland especially in terms of rainfall and the potential for flooding that will be one of the biggest threats with Sally. Hurricane Sally is expected to become a category 2 hurricane with winds over 100 mph. Hurricane Paulette is a category 2 hurricane impacting Bermuda then it will head north and then northeast farther out to sea. Thankfully Paulette is not coming to the United States. Tropical Storm Vicky and Tropical Storm Teddy has formed in the eastern Atlantic. Teddy is expected to become a major hurricane and impact Bermuda. The area in Orange has a 40% chance of development near Africa. The area in the western Gulf near Mexico and South Texas has a very low 10% chance of development. No other systems except for Sally are an immediate threat to the US. Due to La Niña and warm sea surface temperatures the active hurricane season is expected to continue through the fall.
