Recap of the December 16th-17th 2019 Severe Weather and Tornado Outbreak.

The tornado outbreak Monday night and Tuesday produced at least 34 tornadoes from Louisiana to Georgia. One supercell thunderstorm produced TEN tornadoes throughout its life, four of which were in Mississippi. Mississippi alone had fifteen tornadoes. Four of the five EF-3 tornadoes occurred in Mississippi. Two tornadoes on Monday had paths over 60 miles in length. That is definitely impressive. The DeRidder Louisiana and Alexandria Louisiana tornado was 62 miles and the tornado along the Mississippi/Alabama state line was 61 miles.

The biggest and worst Tornado touched down in DeRidder Louisiana and Alexandria Louisiana and winds were between 140-160 MPH making it an EF-3 on the enhanced Fujita scale. The path length was 62 miles long and the tornado was 400 yards wide at its largest. The tornado resulted in one direct fatality. This large and extremely dangerous tornado barreled into northwest portions of Alexandria, Louisiana, about 12:30 p.m. local time Monday. The National Weather Service declared a tornado emergency for the area, which is home to about 47,000 people. A tornado emergency means there is a severe threat to human life and catastrophic damage is imminent or ongoing. Severe damage was reported at Hope Baptist Church and School on Louisiana Highway 28 south of the airport in Alexandria. In neighboring Beauregard Parish, people were trapped in homes northeast of DeRidder, Louisiana. An EF-2 tornado has been confirmed in Colbert County Alabama in the Colbert Heights Alabama area. EF-1 damage has been confirmed in Madison County (Monrovia Alabama area) The NWS survey teams has confirmed at least EF2 tornado damage in Lawrence County. A Survey team has confirmed that an EF-2 tornado touched down in Irwin County Georgia Mystic Georgia Tuesday afternoon, and traveled approximately 19 miles before dissipating in Ben Hill County Georgia. Prelim max wind around 125mph. Max width around 250. Preliminary damage info from the Salt Well Community In Alabama on US 80 just west of Demopolis Alabama (Marengo County): EF-2 damage was found, with winds estimated of 120mph. Two mobile homes were also destroyed at this location and 3 injuries were reported. Deer Creek Rd EF-0 (Bibb County Alabama) Another preliminary tornado track found in Brierfield Alabama (Bibb County): EF-1 with 90mph estimated winds. Max width 300 yards & 2.6 mile path length. Only tree damage was found and no structures impacted. Preliminary Storm Survey info from southern Shelby County Alabama: EF-0 Tornado touched down along AL Hwy 25 just east of Montevallo Alabama. 75-80mph winds, max-width 200 yards, 2.29-mile path. Preliminary damage survey results from storms on 12/16/19: EF1 confirmed in Webster Parish, Louisiana north of Minden Louisiana. Survey teams rated the tornado that went through Edwards, Mississippi as an EF1 with 110mph winds. The tornado began in rural southern Warren County and track north and east into Hinds for roughly 22.7 miles. It crossed I-20, where it was the widest. A survey team in Marion county Mississippi has assessed damage from two tornadoes. An EF2 began southwest of Columbia Mississippi and tracked for about 6.8 miles, ending on the east side of town. This had winds of 112mph. 3 injuries occurred at a collision repair building. Laurel Mississippi had a confirmed tornado Tuesday evening. Second Marion County tornado: developed in the eastern part of the county, was an EF1 with winds of 100mph. Path length was around 6.2 miles. The damage was to some sheds but mostly to trees. The Douglas Graham Group Home in Sumrall, Mississippi, suffered extensive damage from a confirmed tornado produced by this storm. Seven people were injured at the group home. A tornado touched down in Guntown, Mississippi a few miles from Tupelo, Mississippi including significant damage to a church on the town's northern side and an 18-wheeler blown off the road on Highway 45 it was rated an EF-2 with 115mph winds. EF-1 tornado damage found in Tishomingo, Mississippi. NWS Survey Team reports EF-1 tornado Monday afternoon starting 14 miles NE of Amite City Louisiana to 5.5 miles SSW of Mt. Hermon Louisiana. Union County Mississippi EF-1, 90 mph max winds, Lee County EF-2 115 mph max winds, also a weak EF-0 in NE Lee just N of Natchez Trace Pkwy. EF-0 tornado damage was observed near New Site, Mississippi. A tornado touched town ESE of New Albany, Mississippi Monday evening and caused EF-1 damage. A tornado went through Bossier, Webster, and Claiborne Parishes. Survey teams found damage, consistent with a EF-1 Tornado with 110mph winds. A survey team has found localized damage consistent with an EF-0 tornado in Baker County, Georgia. EF-1 tornado in Miller county just northeast of Colquitt, Georgia. Winds were estimated to be around 110 mph and it was on the ground for approximately 6.5 miles. A smaller tornado, EF-0 Tornado, touched down in Early county Georgia Tuesday afternoon. Winds were estimated at 80 mph and were on the ground for approximately 0.4 miles.
