OVER A DOZEN US CITIES HAD ONE OF THE HOTTEST SEPTEMBER'S ON RECORD!

Dozens of cities across the country experienced their hottest September in more than a century of recordkeeping. All told, more than 100 cities nationwide had a top-three-warmest September and more than 50 locations experienced their hottest September on record.

Taken together, these records are yet another example of the increased frequency of high temperature extremes in a warming world. A preliminary tally from NOAA shows that the U.S. recorded 2,491 daily record highs in September, but only 82 daily record lows. This year to date has seen about 12,000 record highs and about 9,600 record lows. The ratio of record highs to record lows has increased every decade since the 1980s. The most extreme heat in September occurred from the Southern Plains into the Southeast, where many locations experienced nights that stayed above 70 degrees and day after day that soared well above 90 degrees. Atlanta set 10 new record high temperatures during the month of September. Over 20 days in September had temperatures in the 90's in September in Atlanta with many days up near 100 degrees.
