New Year brings some snow and powerful winds to the deep south

Snow fell across Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee Sunday night January 2nd and Monday morning January 3rd. Snow also fell across parts of North Carolina and North and West Georgia. The heaviest snow was across the north Georgia mountains, the Tennessee valley including north Alabama, middle Tennessee, eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina. Parts of Western North Carolina had over 11" of snow. Atlanta recorded a trace of snow and most of the western suburbs had some very light accumulations. The North Georgia mountains had between 1 and 4" of snow. Winds were very strong Monday morning with winds between 30 and 60 mph. The highest gust was 56 mph in Georgia. Several counties had trees and power lines down. There were a lot of power outages across North Georgia, northern Alabama, parts of Tennessee and the Carolinas. This comes after record breaking warmth on New Years day and during much of December 2021 and after several tornadoes hit Georgia last Thursday morning and Friday evening.
