La Niña to continue through the end of 2022. What is La Niña and what you need to know.

This current La Niña started during the Fall of 2020 and is expected to continue through the end of 2022: La Niña is an oceanic and atmospheric phenomenon that is the colder counterpart of El Niño, as part of the broader El Niño–Southern Oscillation climate pattern. La Niña is a weather pattern that occurs in the Pacific Ocean. In this pattern, strong winds blow warm water at the ocean’s surface from South America to Indonesia. As the warm water moves west, cold water from the deep rises to the surface near the coast of South America. This weather pattern can and often does affect our weather in the United States and across the globe. The current La Niña can be linked to the flooding in Kentucky, Missouri, parts of Virginia and West Virginia this year and also the extreme and exceptional drought conditions in parts of the southern plains and in the western United States and also wildfires. La Niña brings drier than average conditions to the south typically especially California to Texas and wetter than average (above average rainfall) to parts of the Ohio Valley and Tennessee Valley including much of Kentucky. La Niña also contributed to the active 2020 and 2021 Hurricane seasons. During a La Niña it brings weaker trade winds and less wind shear to the Atlantic.
