Difference between Significant Weather Advisories and Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.

Updated: May 13, 2020

A significant weather advisory (alternately termed as a "significant weather alert" or a "special weather statement", is issued when doppler radar indicates a strong thunderstorm is producing small hail or high winds who stength does not reach the criteria to be classified as a severe thunderstorm. A significant weather advisory is typically issued if the hail size in a thunderstorm is one-half to one inch in diameter, and/or winds of 35 to 50 miles per hour. A severe thunderstorm warning is issued for 58 mile per hour winds or greater most warnings will indicate 60 mile per hour winds and or 1 inch quarter size hail.
