Below is a look at what Spring might be like. In the south and southeast above normal rainfall will continue with periods of storms at times. March and April is when Severe Weather (Damaging Winds, hail, and tornadoes) typically peaks in the south especially in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, Louisiana, parts of Florida and surrounding states. I expect above normal flooding and an elevated flood risk in the south especially in Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana and parts of the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes. I expect above average to well above average temperatures across much of the southern US this spring. Below average temperatures across the far northern United States parts of Montana, North Dakota and areas along the Canadian border. Areas up to the north will have a slow transition from winter to spring. Below average precipitation can be expected in the Southwest especially parts of California and Arizona. There will be an elevated fire risk in the southwest and parts of the western US as well. Parts of Western Texas will be drier than normal as well. Drought conditions will likely worsen in parts of California. Just because an area is expected to see above average temperatures and above average precipitation does not mean cool snaps won't be possible or some dry days. Also just because California and the southwest is expected to have below average precipitation does not mean there won't be rain at all just less than average. There typically is one last cold spell later in March or in parts of April for the south. I don't recommend planting until AFTER Easter (April 13th) just to be on the safe side. It is possible to have 80 and 90 degee days a little ahead of schedule this year in the south earlier than the typical 1st 80 and 90 degree days. Below I also put the typical tornado and severe weather risk areas by month those maps are based on climatalogy and averages.
