BEYOND THE FORECAST: WHAT IS A QLCS TORNADO AND WHY ARE THEY SO DANGEROUS?

The term QLCS stands for 'Quasi-Linear Convective System'. These are tornadoes that form very quickly with little warning. They 'spin up' with a line of storms often called a squall line. Often times there is no tornado warning issued for a QLCS tornado due to how fast they spin up. The QLCS Tornadoes are typically brief but can cause damage in a matter of seconds. Most EF-0 or EF-1 Tornadoes are QLCS tornadoes.
