Since the 1950's over 90 storm names have been officially retired. Over a dozen storm names have been retired just since 2016 alone. Storms get retired when they are deadly and destructive. Harvey, Irma, Maria, Dorian, Laura, Ida, Michael and Florence have all been retired within the past several years.
