Beyond The Forecast: Why is our environment so quiet after a big accumulating snow?

Snowfall absorbs more sound making the environment sound quieter. After that snow melts the sound is back to normal. When you have fresh, individual snowflake there is often more air in between them. The snow absorbs sound similar to foam. Another cold-weather aspect to sound is that it doesn’t travel as well when the air is cold. Cold air is denser so the sound has a harder time traveling than if it were in a warmer air mass.
