BEYOND THE FORECAST: WHAT ARE THE CRITERIAS NEEDED FOR A STORM TO BE A BLIZZARD?

Many people think a blizzard has more to do with the amount of snow but actually it has more to do with wind. To officially quality a storm as a blizzard it has to meet the following three criteria:

1. Sustained wind or frequent gusts of 35 mph or greater.

2. Considerable falling and or blowing snow reducing visibility to under a quarter mile.

3.These conditions have to continue for at least three consecutive hours.

The last big blizzard to affect parts of the southeast and in Georgia and Alabama was the blizzard of March 93 also known as the storm of the century! Blizzards are most common in the upper Midwest and Great Plains.
