The "Sea Islands" Hurricane the category 3 major hurricane hit near Savannah Georgia on August 27th, 1893, leaving around 1,000-2,000 people dead in its wake. Reports put winds around 120mph during landfall. Total damage to Georgia and South Carolina, came to around $1 million. 1898 The "Georgia" Hurricane The Strongest Hurricane on Record in Georgia. It was a category 4 which made landfall on Cumberland Island the storm killed at least 179 people. Damage was estimated at $1.5 billion with Brunswick Georgia taking the brunt of the category 4 storm's impact, a 16-foot storm surge devasted the coastal city. 1979 Hurricane David David hit Georgia on September 4th, bringing heavy surf and high winds. David's Storm surge was responsible for two deaths. At its peak, David was a category 5 hurricane. 1979 Hurricane Frederic was the worst storm to hit Alabama it was a category 3 with 130mph winds. 1990 -- Tropical Storm Marco Eastern Georgia saw heavy rainfall as Marco moved through the region Oct. 12, forcing the evacuation of around 300 people in Augusta. The Savannah River city suffered mightily as Marco’s remnants moved through. Flooding left 450 homeless and five people drowned. Damage totaled $42 million in Georgia. 1995 Hurricane Opal On October 4th-5th, West Georgia and the Atlanta Metro Area were hammered by Heavy Rain and Very Strong Winds, downing over 4,000 trees in Atlanta and causing numerous power outages throughout the metro area. In extreme Northeastern Georgia, Rabun County suffered $5 million in damage. 10 people were killed. Hurricane Danny hit Alabama in 1997 with strong winds and Heavy Rain Hurricane Ivan 2004 affected much of Alabama with extreme wind and Heavy Rainfall. Hurricane Dennis' 2005 Dennis' effects were felt throughout a wide swath of Georgia July 9-10, its rain bands flooding numerous counties in the state's interior, including outer Metro Atlanta areas. Douglas county recorded 10 inches of Rainfall, which flooded several roads and destroyed a number of homes. Two people died and damage reached $24 million. In 2009 Hurricane Ida was also a bad storm forAlabama 2017 Hurricane Irma hit Georgia hard! As Irma headed North mandatory evacuations were ordered for all areas east of I-95 on September 6th and Atlanta found itself placed under its first-ever Tropical storm warning. A total of 540,000 people on Georgia coast were ordered to leave the area. Three people died in Georgia. 2018 Hurricane Michael hit Georgia hard especially Central and Southwestern Georgia. The storm at it's peak in Florida was a category 5 with 160mph winds even by the time it moved into Georgia it was still a major category 3 hurricane with winds over 110mph it holds the record for the strongest hurricane winds ever to be recorded in Georgia, the storm caused $25 million in damage. Massive damage to crops and structures. South And Southwestern Georgia Farms was hit especially hard. Many areas still are feeling the affects from the terrible storm. The storm was the worst storm ever to hit the Florida Panhandle and Southwestern Georgia.
