WEATHER EXPLANATION: Since it has been raining so much during the 2019-2020 winter in the south you might be asking the question Why so much rain? Well mainly due to the Neutral pattern we are in (see the last photo below for what a typical neutral phase is like) ALSO a warmer climate causes more evaporation and as a result more water is available for precipitation. Now just because the climate is warming overall does not mean it does not or won’t get cold anymore or that we won’t have snow storms in future winters. For every 1 degree increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold around 4 percent more water vapor, which leads to heavier rains and increased flooding. Not only have we noticed this trend locally with our wet pattern this year but also parts of last year and especially 2018, 2009, and 2015. We have also noticed it with hurricanes like Florence, Harvey, and Sandy. Warmer water=more fuel for stronger hurricanes and there has also been a trend recently of hurricanes slowing down and stalling out which leads to catastrophic flooding and life threatening storm surge as was the case with Harvey, Florence, and Dorian.
