Beyond The Forecast: Why is thunder louder some times more than other times?

When thunder is really loud often times we have "Elevated thunderstorms". Thunder can be louder when we have a temperature inversion. When we do have an inversion the sound waves get trapped near the ground. Thunder is often louder when it is colder as well so when temperatures are in the 40's or 50's and there is thunder it is often louder than when it is in the 70's or 80's.
