Beyond The Forecast All About Bombogenesis!

Bombogenesis occurs when a mid-latitude cyclone rapidly intensifies, dropping at least 24 millibars in 24 hours. The formation of a rapidly strengthening weather system/storm creates what is known as a Bomb Cyclone. Really the term is fancy for a storm that rapidly intensifies. This happens when cold air comes in one side of a storm and warm ocean water typically along the east coast in the Atlantic fuels the storm. Storms that do undergo Bombogenesis can produce hurricane force wind gusts. In the winter time blizzard conditions are likely and heavy snow.
